Why Install an EV Charging System at Home?

If you own an electric vehicle, having an at-home charging solution offers unmatched convenience and reliability. Home charging allows you to charge your vehicle overnight, giving you a full battery each morning. This also means being able to park at home and not at a public charging station, saving significant time and reducing the stress of charging on busy days. Additionally, an at-home charging system can be more cost-effective, as it can take advantage of off-peak electricity rates.

Here are some additional benefits of at-home EV charging systems:

  • Reduced charging costs (no more paying for expensive public chargers)
  • Improved property value
  • Enhanced control over charging schedules and maintenance
  • Greater energy independence and reduced dependence on public infrastructure

Prerequisites for an EV Charger Installation

Before one of our electricians can install an EV charger in your home, they may have to take a number of preparatory steps. First, they'll need to assess whether your electrical system can handle the additional load of a new EV charger. EV chargers draw a lot of current, and this could put a strain on your current system if you have an outdated panel. In some cases, we may even advise replacing your electrical panel to prevent overloading and allow your electrical infrastructure to feed the power necessary to your charging unit.

We will also need to inspect your wiring. Usually, we advise running a new, dedicated circuit specifically for your charger. Additionally, it’s important to also secure any necessary permits from local authorities for compliance with municipal codes and standards. Finally, your new charging system will need to be properly grounded both for code compliance and safety. If your home is not properly configured with adequate grounding, then we may need to rectify this problem before we can install your new charging unit.

EV Charger FAQs

What types of electric vehicle chargers are compatible with the electrical systems commonly found in homes in the GTA?
Typically, you’ll find both Level 1 and Level 2 charging in homes. Level 1 charging is basically a fancy way of saying “plugging your car into a standard wall outlet.” This 120-volt AC charging is generally the slowest and the least reliable, and therefore, we generally don’t recommend it unless you drive very little on an average day. Level 2 charging uses a 240-volt connection to charge at a much faster rate and is far superior for commuters and those who regularly drive a good distance.

Are there any local incentives or rebates available for installing a home electric vehicle charger in St. Catharines?
At the moment, there is no incentive program for EV charging station installation through the Ontario government, but there may be incentives through the Government of Canada. The Government of Canada is also offering a discount of up to $5,000 for the purchase or lease of a zero-emissions vehicle. That discount may significantly discount or even fully cover the cost of purchasing and installing an at-home EV charger.

What are the typical costs associated with purchasing and installing a home EV charger?
Installation costs can vary greatly, so it’s impossible to provide an accurate estimate online. Things like running new electrical lines or circuits, charger location, and upgrades to existing electrical infrastructure can all contribute to the overall cost. We strongly recommend speaking with one of our skilled installation professionals about your home to get a more accurate quote.

Can I charge multiple electric vehicles simultaneously using a single home charging unit?
Some charging units can charge multiple vehicles at once! However, this capability is specific to the charger model you purchase. If you plan on charging your vehicles simultaneously, make sure the unit you purchase is capable of charging like this. Never attempt to charge multiple vehicles at the same time on a charger that is not designed to do so! Doing so is incredibly dangerous and could damage both your vehicles and the charging unit itself.
