What Are Ductless Air Conditioners?

A Flexible Cooling Solution

Regardless of the season, we want our homes to be a comfortable oasis, free from the pressures of everyday stressors. But it can be a challenge to sit back and relax if your home temperature is too hot or too cold.

Mr. Furnace believes that your home should be just right - we guarantee to make it that way. By offering a wide range of home temperature solutions, we’re always able to find the perfect fit for our clients. Ductless air conditioning units are one such option.

Ductless Air Conditioners Defined

A ductless air conditioner is a unit that runs separately from the rest of your HVAC system. In a nutshell, they’re a fully functional air conditioning system minus the ductwork. Instead, there are 2 main components: the outdoor component holds the refrigerant (which is needed to cool the air) and powers the whole unit. The indoor component delivers the cool air to your home.

The indoor component is usually mounted to a wall in the area of the house where temperature control is desired. This design is highly versatile and can be used to deliver cool air to almost any area of your home - from bedrooms to common areas. The only requirement is that it’s installed where the line to the outdoor component is fully functional.

Is a Ductless Unit Right for You?

Ductless air conditioning systems are typically used in homes that may not be well suited for a full forced-air system, such as townhomes or apartments.

Ductless air conditioning is also a good choice for homes where air conditioning is only required for one room. For example, if your home’s lower floors remain naturally cool throughout the summer while the upstairs bedrooms get uncomfortably warm, a full forced-air system may be too much to meet your needs.

Other Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioners

Because ductless air conditioning units provide temperature control for smaller areas, they are often more economical than full air conditioning units. The independence of the ductless air conditioner means that you don’t need to worry about leaks in the ductwork or throughout the entire home. Ductless units help keep things simple.

There are many different opportunities for ductless air conditioners to outshine their counterparts. If your HVAC system does not already include air conditioning, the installation and maintenance of a simple ductless unit will likely cost less than that of a forced-air system.

The Takeaway: Ducts or Ductless?

Ultimately, the best decision is the one that is best able to meet your home comfort needs. To determine whether your home is better suited to a full forced-air unit or a ductless air conditioner, you should evaluate your home and your family’s comfort needs.

What factors rank the highest when it comes to your home comfort? Always consider factors such as how old your home is, what type of building you’re in, your budget, and your local climate before investing in a home comfort system.

The process can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not well-versed in HVAC - that’s why at Mr. Furnace, we’re here to help
