Why does my heat pump enter defrost mode?
When ice or frost forms on the exterior coils of a heat pump, it enters defrost configuration. This is a regular part of the heat pump procedure and contributes to its overall efficiency as the frost build-up reduces the heat pump’s capacity to transfer heat successfully, resulting in lower heating performance and an increase in your bills. The heat pump momentarily switches to the cooling mode in defrost mode, and the exterior fan turns off. The frost and ice melt as a result and the heat produced by the coolant is employed to thaw the coils. The heat pump returns to heating mode once the defrost cycle is completed.
